Default Crazy TE-Ryan's Discount Video LP Blowout Thread

I was going to do the crazy car dealer schtick, but once I typed it out it seemed more annoying than funny, so let's get right to the point.

I'm TE-Ryan. If you click through to the videos linked below, you may notice that they're posted by some dude named TheRyanDS. Don't worry kids, that's me too. I cannot commit to a single online identity. It's a problem I have and I'm totally seeing someone about it. It's probably hopeless though.

That's all besides the point though. You're here to see the Super Talking Time Bros 2 Let's Play aren't you? I'll just post the link now.

Super Talking Time Bros 2 (31 vids, complete)

For the excessively curious, here are a few more things to check out. This list may or may not get longer as time passes. Most likely it will.

TheRyanDS' YouTube channel

Super Adventure Minecraft (3 vids)
???? ???? ??????? (one-shot)
Mickey's Safari in Letterland (7 vids, complete)
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (7 vids, super-speed, complete)
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (11 vids, super-speed, complete)
Final Fantasy V: The Ancient Cave (17 vids, incomplete)
Kirby's Adventure (8 vids, complete)
Kirby's Dream Land (2 vids, complete)
Monster Hunter (PS2) (15 vids, incomplete)
Megaman X (14 vids, complete)
Hasbro Game Night: Jenga (Not an LP, but...)

So Kirby's Adventure for NES is what's currently going down.

Also Monster Hunter is kind of going to be a project that goes on forever, even though nobody watches it. That one's mostly for me.

But here's the thing: I don't know what to do next. Kirby's Dream Land 2 would be the next logical step, but I don't feel familiar enough with the game to try to have at it. Maybe once I've played through it a couple more times on the Dream Collection. Kirby Super Star is definitely on my to-do list, but I'd like to put Kirby aside for a while. I don't really want to establish myself as "that Kirby-playing guy" even though that's totally me.

I don't have an issue doing blind runs, but preferrably nothing too grindy (yes I see the irony).

Do I have to play Minecraft to attract subscribers? I don't really want to do a Minecraft thing. I don't have a hook, and I'm not funny enough to coast on that.

Talking Time! Advise! Please?

If you want to accrue subscribers, you need to LP a game that not everyone, his dog, and his mother is LPing. Find a niche and work it.

NorthernLion, for example, started with Super Meat Boy videos, a comprehensive run of the game at a time when no one else was doing anything like that. It is now his actual, bill-paying occupation with 77k subscribers (currently doing mainly Spelunky and Binding of Isaac videos). The above was his advice. Basically, you're not going to get new blood in a saturated market.

If you wanna do something new, maybe LP a run of Final Fantasy V: Ancient Cave, complete with Talking Time-ified Englishly Adequate patch!

That could get messy fast. I've only dipped my toes into vanilla FFV, but I think I've gleaned enough from TK Flash's LP to stand a chance of making it a few floors in. I was also going to say I didn't want to step on his toes, but then it occurred to me that they would be quite different, TK being an expert and me being a total noob.

I'm not saying I wouldn't consider it though. On second thought, people like when LPers are in over their heads, right? This could work...

Also, I have no idea what nobody's playing besides ROM hacks and new games. I have no means to record new games aside from propping up a camera in front of my TV, and that's a little tacky.

FFVAC would work really well, actually. You might want to do some editing, though, because there's a lot of not-so-exciting times in the game unless you rush through.

After many trials and tribulations (apparently I fail hard at patching ROMs), I have FFVAC up and ready to go. This is going to happen. I may even start recording tonight.

Just be aware that this could last forever if I play until I win. I haven't a single roguelike win to my credit. My experience with FFV amounts to spending a few hours grinding AP for the first set of jobs about a decade ago and reading anything Brickroad has written about it on his blog. Saying this will be a bumpy ride could be the Understatement of the Year.

It really seems to be the way to go though, what with TT all in a huff about FF roguelikes right now. Better give the people what they want.

I can't help but think that FFV has all sorts of little quirks that you not knowing is going to hurt your run.

Thoughts during the first 10 minutes of your Ancient Cave video:

* Yay, you used my name for the patch!

*Names are garbled. I think what happened here was that you applied the english patch, but didn't use the srm provided with the patch and instead used the one that came with the ancient cave patch. You can change the names of your entire party with the Namingway Barrel, I'd recommend doing that before setting your Lv to 1, so that you can exit and save again in the overworld, for the sake of saving time.

* I think you should've gotten your bearings regarding what all the options are in the main room first before you started recording, a bit of time spent meandering here.

* Lava tiles do no damage, except when they do. The bubbly lava in the organic-looking castle WILL hurt you if you get to it, maybe you do later in the video, but I'm impatient and wanted to comment before it was done.

* Monsters in chests will throw you into a battle with monsters from several floors down, and on some floors this can throw you into a boss fight, as you experienced.

* If the Harp's name doesn't contain 'Apollo' then it probably isn't worth equipping.

Still, looking forward to the rest of it!

My comment earlier wasn't meant to be all negative nancy. Actually, I think the idea of your viewers 'teaching' you FF5 as you play is interesting as hell.

I've shared some advice on the video itself.

Yeah, that's more or less why I decided to take the plunge in the first case. I figured that playing with the viewers was a hook that screenshot LPs use enough, why not give it a shot here? If it works, I might even eventually make it to the end!

I'm very pleased with the amount of advice that I've gotten so far! Now it's just a matter of finding some time to actually sit down and record some more.

Since Ryan didn't mention it, and there's hardly any views, new FFV:AC video is up!

Part the Third is up now. Go have some fun.

Episode 3 of Kirby's Adventure will be up in a bit too. If you're into that sort of thing.

There's a part four of FFVAC what will be here in roughly ten minutes. I recommend you make a sandwich or something first. It's 41 minutes long and is all grinding. Fun!

I hate seeing so many copies of my avatar stacked on top of each other, but views for the new Final Fantasy 5 Ancient Cave vid are lacking, so I shall keep a-postin'! I suppose I could stand to update that top post too, eh?

If you fight those statues that freaked you out again, use the Gold Needle things to kill them instantly.

They're actually a good source of AP!

I was vaguely aware that gold needles were the best way to deal with those, but given their numbers and the OHKO, I figured the risk wasn't worth it. Maybe it would have been? We'll never know!

I posted the exciting finale to Kirby's Adventure today. Also the first Monster Hunter video in ages, because I have 29 episodes done and they're just sitting there collecting dust.

There may or may not be a new FFVAC vid tonight. I'd say there's roughly an 85% chance I won't forget about it. EDIT: I didn't! It's here!

Lastly, a brand new LP is beginning next weekend! It's yet another one that I played endlessly as a kid, and is my misguided effort to rip off Brickroad's super-speed thing. Now go forth and froth not with demand, but anticipation!

So this happened:

Also, a new episode of FFV Ancient Cave should be up tomorrow! <--LIES. Between Thanksgiving and Pokemon I just didn't care enough this weekend. I have most of this week off though, so maybe I'll do two mid-week.

I haven't done any more FFVAC videos because... Pokémon mostly, but things have also been kind of hectic around here and I haven't felt like it.

I did post new Wario Land and Monster Hunter episodes. Because they were done and sitting on my hard drive and all I really had to do was hit the upload button and then go back to EV training Abomasnow. Yes, I'm insane.

New FFVAC is here! Well, half of an episode, anyway. I decided to split it in half so I can post the other one on Wednesday and make it look like I did two updates! Also it was getting close to the 50-minute mark and nobody wants to sit through a whole 50-minute YouTube video. Right?

The next episode of Wario Land is uploading here as I type.

I've also updated the original post with more question marks to build massive hype for my next few projects. Go ahead, try to guess what they are! It'll be fun!

Hey so I haven't updated this thread in forever, but we hit a milestone...

To celebrate, I'm going to be posting one video in a new series each day this week. That series just happens to be...

Also, Wario Land and Final Fantasy V Ancient Cave and Monster Hunter have all been updated since my last post. Time to get crackin' there, video-watchers!

It's been forever since I've updated this thing because reasons, and last night I recorded a new FFV Ancient Cave video, which I haven't done in even longer. It's basically ten minutes of me grinding on the first two floors, but I do sing a thematically appropriate version of the Adventure Time theme song at the beginning so there's that. It shouldn't stall out again for a while, so stay tuned if that's the kind of thing you're into ("that kind of thing" being me failing that this game).

Monster Hunter is going nowhere fast despite the fact that I have at least 10 more videos sitting on my hard drive, ready for uploading.

I've got a fun little one-video "LP" sitting in my pocket. It's awful in so many ways, but I had a great time recording it. Don't know if I want to bust it out now or save it for a rainy day.

Lastly, I've been a lot more into Minecraft than usual lately, so that might be a thing soon. I'm pretty sure that YouTube's ToS states that everyone's got to have at least a few Minecraft videos on their channel.

Well I can certainly bring the derp.

(I haven't watched enough Roguecraft to know whether the derp quota is filled or not)

New Ancient Cave last weekend, if you missed it. Also a new Monster Hunter. It's another one of those episodes where absolutely nothing happens, but then again the one where I farm iron ore has the most views so who even knows?
