Let's Fight for Everlasting Peace! (Mega Man)
Our story begins, as these things often do, with a title screen. For some reason there's no music. Even in 1987, that was weird. I assume everyone knows this, but instead of throwing each level at you in succession, Mega Man let's you choose the order in which you face each "Robot Master". We'll start with Guts Man. It starts out innocently enough. Kill the little hard-hat buggers when you see the whites of their eyes, and move on. Barely into the first stage, and already we're making timed jumps with little margin for error. This is where we separate the boys from the men. If you can't make it through Guts Man, there's no way you're gonna finish this game. Whew, made it across, and look! Some kind soul left us an energy recharge. How thoughtful. Robo Miners, Platforms and spikes, oh my! I also didn't make the correct series of drops to get that extra life, but it beats accidentally getting impaled on spikes. 1-6?!
I've only beat 2,3, and 4! I've played the first though, you going to go in the order most condusive to kicking ass? or will be going for most difficult run (using no master weapons?) what's your shtick?

A telephone on a plunger? The hell? It may look bizzare, but this guy can take off quite a bit of energy. Narrow corridors before the boss are a Mega Man tradition. This game even has enemies for you to deal with, because it loves you that much. Here's our first boss. He looks imposing. I'm expecting quite a battle. Well, whaddya know, he went down like a little bitch. Next: Can I borrow your scissors? |

I basically go i the order I'm most comfortable with. Plus, doing Guts early on let's you avoid back tracking later.

I usually leave Guts for last, since then I can use the Magnetic Beam to skipp those stupid dropping platforms once and for all.
Fun Fact: I save Ice Man for second last for that same reason! |

You should totally fight all the bosses with the buster. Show us your power.

Next is Cut Man. When I was a kid, we thought it the height of hilarity to call him something else. It wasn't very nice, and I know Cut Man cried when he thought no one could see him. Children can be so cruel. It's a fairly easy level. Those propeller guys need some serious dental work, though. Hey, Pac-Man and my old erector set pieces are trying to kill me! (Yell that out in public and enjoy the confused stares of frightened passers-by) This screen is actually a lot easier than it looks. Look, another one! Talk to your aunt in Pennsylvania while unclogging your toilet! Only three easy payments of $19.99! This turret on the ceiling is a pain in the ass. You're either going to take a hit, or take a long time killing this thing Using your Guts Power, these two blocks will kill Cut Man handily. Unfortunately, I lost enough energy getting this screenshot that he killed me before I could toss the second block. Which is too bad, because they don't come back. Fortunately, he's almost as easy to kill with your normal weapon. Next: Current Events |

I already beat the first six stages before starting this thread, and even if I hadn't, I'm not that good.

I think this would be better suited as a video let's play, but that's just me.
EDIT: http://camstudio.org/ for the software, get a headset, and record each level and upload it on vimeo or something. You can also set it up so you put out a live feed and other tyrants can get on skype and guest comment along with you. Last edited by Shadax; 05-19-2008 at 09:13 PM. |

I agree with the Fun Fact though. For a long time, I couldn't even make it past the disappearing blocks part without using the Magnetic Beam. |

Wait, wait, wait. If we're going to have a billion of these things running at once, can we at least try to make each one interesting and remarkable? The Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior entries were fantastic, and Zelda was really good, but some of them are clearly not well thought-out. This one is probably the worst offender to date. Not to be mean about this, but I'm going to have to start cracking down on Let's Plays that are just a series of aimless screenshots with a slapdash line of text after each. There's a lot of material in a Mega Man game beyond "This screen is actually a lot easier than it looks." -- why is it easier than it looks? Describe enemy patterns! Describe tactics! Describe gameplay! Describe! Be funny! Be interesting! Don't just do these for the sake of jumping on the bandwagon, OK? I created this forum, so please do not squander it.
tl;dr: I'm hosting this stuff, people. Please have the courtesy to entertain me. |

Yay! I always do Gutmans first too. Most of the strategy guides (Okay, Nintendo Power, but I think others too) at the time recommended beating him last, or at least after Elecman, but that never made sense to my friend who had the game, because you'd have to backtrack to get the magnet beam. His wisdom passed on to me, so it's always Gutsman -> Cutman -> Elecman -> Ice Man -> Fire Man -> Bomb man

These guys seem content just to spend their days sliding back and forth. That is, until you attempt to join them on their platform. They're none to happy about sharing their space, and they let you know it by moving twice as fast. Sooo, you have the option of either making carefully timed jumps or... ...giving them a taste of your newly acquired weapon. This one was even kind enough to leave me a free weapon refill. Two screens of those sliders are followed by electric beams that appear and disappear. They leave you plenty of time to get through, though. Onward... ...and upward. This ladder is where the stage gets a little more difficult. See those green things? When their eyes pop out, they shoot dual electric beams. They have pretty good aim, too. You're going to have to alternately fire right and left, and you'll probably get hit anyway. Which means getting knocked off the ladder. For someone with poor reflexes, that means starting this climb over. Of course, this ladder is three screens, and enemies respawn when you leave a screen. After making it to the top, we're introduced to a fun friend that'll be appearing and disappearing throughout the series. (By fun friend, I mean potentialy frustrating obstacle) These blocks show up for a couple seconds, then vanish. It's all an excersize in rote memorization, learning what order the blocks appear in. Sometimes you have to to jump to a block that's arriving even as the one you're standing on is on its way out. Because Capcom loves you. Take the right ladder if you don't want to have to do this screen over again. I didn't get any in this shot, but there are blocks here, too. Fortunately, they appear in a straight line out from the ladder. However, there are those weapon refills over there. Tempting, aren't they? Only if you want to do the blocks in the previous screen over again. I don't. I get to the top, and there's another item waiting for me. That energy recharge looks so easy to get, doesn't it? Yes it is, but it's getting out of there that's the hard part. If you don't jump just right, you're taking the plunge, and I don't mean matrimony. Damn you, healing items, why must you taunt me so? So, with a heavy heart, I leave the recharge behind. This is a shot of the next section. There's not much to say about it except more ladders and eye robots, with a few electrical beams thrown in. Instead, I'll take the right ladder and skip ahead to... |

...this screen. That looks like an item worth getting, and it is. To get it, I'm putting the Power Arm I got from Guts Man to good use. This is also why I did him first. Fight him after Elec Man, and you have to go all the way through ElecMan's stage again. I just saved me some time. The prize behind the blocks is... M. My best guss is it stands for "Magnet Beam"(?). As you can see, it creates a platform that hangs around for about ten seconds. It's going to come in very handy in reaching otherwise unreachable platforms, and it'll be indispensible when I go after Dr. Wily. A little more climbing and a phone-on-a-plunger later, and we're at the corridor to Elec Man's chamber. No enemies in this one, just beams. The top and bottom beams go on while the middle one goes off, and vice versa. You could call it alternating current, but you probably shouldn't. Elec Man jumps around firing an Elec Beam that's pretty darn hard to avoid. You'll need quick reflexes to beat him. Unless you have Cut Man's weapon and at least half a bar of energy. This reduces the amount of strategy to standing there and firing your Cut Blade. It doesn't take much. Three down, three to go. I put a bit more time into this one. Hopefully by the time I finish the first game, I'll be better at this. |

As I've said in other threads, this LP is kind of an evolving... thing. Also, there's been some reservations expressed about me doing all six, so I plan to do at least the first two and see what people say after that. I do plan on finishing, though, and Ice Man is ready to be posted soon. It'll be a little different, but I kind of like the idea of doing random, different things with each stage.
Anyhow, like I said, I plan on doing 2 as well, and what I want to know is, what order should I fight the bosses in? I have an order I usually do, but how should I play it this time? I'm counting on you all to select an order that will have me dying. A lot. |

Why, you go kill Elec Man, then redo his Elec Level and blast the Elec Blocks with his Elec Beam. Sort of inco'venient.

Way, way more convienient then dealing with those platforms though.

Man, I never knew you could kill those blocks with Elecman's beam. I guess playing through Elecman's stage twice is still more inconvenient to me than just doing Gutsman's lifts.

I can't think of a boss order in MM2 that would have you dying a lot, except maybe to start with Quick Man and Heat Man.
By the way, using Magnet Beam/Item-2/Rush Jet to skip tricky platforming segments is a cop-out. I insist everything be done by hand. Memorization ahoy! I didn't post in this thread yesterday but I did re-play Mega Man 3 in honor of it. I started with Snake Man and killed him without getting hit because I am just that manly. |

I would argue that Snake Man is the easiest to kill without getting hit.
