Attack of the Pig King- Let's Play Mother 3
Mother 3, sequel to SNES cult hit Earthbound, was released back in April of 2006 and, despite the complaints of a very vocal internet minority, never saw an official release on this side of the Pacific. Those same fans went to work, though, producing a fan translation of their own. That fan translation was released back in October and will be the version I'm using for this Lets Play. Things I'll be needing from each of you before I can begin playing:
I'd prefer to keep the character names the same (for simplicity of discussion's sake), but I'll leave it to you guys. Don't fault me if I still call him Lucas from time to time, though. Gameplay update coming later tonight. Call me crazy, but let's go for the default names for everything. The Mother series doesn't strike me as the best place for names like PANTS or BRIEFS.
Favourite Food: Shrimp Favourite Thing: Video Games |

Keep the family names. Then give Dog, Food and Thing all the same name. (C'mere Ralph! Time to eat some Ralph!)

Actually the more I think about it the more I am convinced favorite food needs to be Bacon.

I renamed the pink-haired princess Rabbit. I also did that in Tales of Vesperia. I plan to do that to all pink-haired princesses. Chibi-Moon FTW!
Spite as favorite thing is too awesome not to use. Favorite food: Cupcakes mmm cupcakes... |

C'mon. C'mon! I just want to be able to visit Parish's grave. |

I don't know if I can do the Bacon/Bacon/Bacon thing because I had a terrible roommate back in college with the dog from hell. The dog's name was Chicken because it liked chicken.

Alternately, name the dog Edgar, because that is objectively the best dog name ever. Honestly though anything is better than "Boney". |

Boner?

Traditionally, I always try to name cowboy-type characters Django, after the movie of the same name. And also Boktai.

Man. Bacon is the pirate/ninja of food items. Let's go with something fun and exotic. Like Heikegani Crab or Couronne Lochoise.

Yes, that's why I suggested it. Once you've identified the food with the most awesome there's no point in looking back.

I think we've got our selections, gang.

I forgot to mention that there's an 8 character limit on entries, so something like "ToastyDog" would have to be shortened to something like "Toasty D".

T. Dog for the Fallout 3 cross-reference.

We could always go with the old stand by of Pants for favorite food.

The official disclaimer screen. Their dedication is admirable, but they're crazy if they ever think this will see an official release here. Ah, Mother 3. I do have one more option for your guys if you're so inclined- window color. Here's the initial naming screen, with the options voted for yesterday afternoon. Sorry, but I just couldn't bring myself to naming Hinawa "Parish." 12/2/2008 - Prelude to Terror These are the Nowhere Islands, a mostly natural area with only a single village, Tazmily. Our story begins well on the outskirts of Tazmily however, in the mountains beyond the Sunshine Forest. This is Alec's house. Claus, Lucas' twin brother, awakens us and informs us that there's a baby Drago outside that wants to play. I guess we better get going. But thou must! |

Facing a recursive decision once again, I submit and decide to change out of my pajamas. Outside the house we find Alec, Lucas & Claus' grandfather. He's sad that this is the last day that we'll be spending with him before we head home, but he urges me to run on ahead to Claus to play with the Dragos. Surprisingly, Lucas seems to have the ability to understand what animals are saying. The last thing of interest in this area is this frog. Frogs serve as Mother 3's save points. Regardless of the situation, each frog tells you to give his regards to the next frog you meet. We find Claus with the Drago family, play fighting by dashing repeatedly into the monster's stomach. If only we knew how to dash... Breaking the fourth wall a little bit, Grandpa Alec tells us to dash using the B Button. Lucas easily masters dashing and the Drago play falls to his blow. Despite the fearsome exterior, the Dragos are a very gentle species of dragon. Even when guarding their baby, the dragons pose no threat to the young Lucas and Claus. Hearing all the racket, a mole cricket runs up to join in. He can't resist a play fight. Last edited by TheSL; 12-02-2008 at 09:52 AM. |
